Polyester Webbing

Polyester is a versatile fibre, which has excellent properties for automotive webbing and medical webbing applications as well as countless other applications.

The UV resistance of polyester makes it ideal for outdoor use: Outdoor products such as tents and tarpaulins, sails and life jackets requiring durable tapes able to withstand exposure to the elements are an ideal application area for polyester webbing. Polyester tape has the same water repellent and mildew resistant benefits as polypropylene but with the soft, smooth, shiny appearance of nylon.

Polyester is suitable for a wide range of applications, its strength also makes it ideal for industrial or technical products such as safety belts, straps and lashing but also consumer products such as bag straps, sporting goods and pet products.

Polyester webbing is very durable and has a higher tensile strength than Polypropylene. Polyester is similar to nylon but is more durable with greater tensile strength, making polyester webbing ideally suited for situations requiring greater weight-bearing needs and longer durability. Polyester will not stretch when wet, unlike cotton or nylon webbing, which is also an added benefit of using polyester webbing in outdoor and wet environments.

BOWMER BOND GENERAL PROPERTIES INFORMATION FOR:

POLYESTER WEBBING

POLYESTER: The full chemical name for Polyester is ‘Polyethylene Terephthalate’

STRENGTH: Very high strength tenacity (Up to 10g/den)

ELONGATION: Up to 30% at break (Most of our webbings are around 20%)

ABRASION: Excellent abrasion resistance

MOISTURE: Polyester has a very low regain of 0.4%

TEMPERATURE: The melting point is 260°C and will withstand temperatures above 180°C for many hours, however, it will lose some tensile strength if kept at high temperature for extended periods. As a thermoplastic fibre, the appearance and handle of Polyester fabrics can be improved by heat setting. Low temperature resistance is very good down to -100°c with some increase in tensile strength but greatly reduced extensibility.

COMBUSTIBILITY: Polyester is difficult to ignite and tightly woven structures do not burn easily. Polyester will pass some tests without special finishes, however, for higher specifications or lightweight webbings, a flame retardant finish can be applied to improve these properties.

UV RESISTANCE: Polyester has excellent resistance to sunlight (one of the best for outdoor use).

CHEMICAL RESISTANCE: Polyester is resistant to most common chemicals. It will degrade gradually in strong acids and alkalis and is resistant to most solvents and oils.

INSECTS AND MICRO-ORGANISMS: Polyester is not affected but some lubricants and finishes may be attacked by fungi and bacteria.

DYEING: It can be dyed to most shades and has some of the best colour fastness properties.

FINISHES AVAILABLE:

  • Heat Set
  • Stiffened
  • Water Repellent
  • Flame Retardant
  • Anti-Bacterial
