Polypropylene Webbing

Polypropylene webbing is available in the widest range of colours and is excellent for producing webbing with coloured stripes. It is highly resistant to chemicals and a very popular fibre. However, it is worth noting that polypropylene is not as strong or as abrasion-resistant as nylon or polyester.

Polypropylene is a versatile fibre which can lend itself to a wide range of applications. If neither high UV resistance nor high strength features are required, Polypropylene webbing is a cost-effective solution which can be used in applications such as luggage straps, bag handles, dog collars and leashes, to name just a few.

Due to its many useful properties, Polypropylene is suitable for both commercial and leisure uses. Polypropylene is light and has a low water absorption rate which means it is highly buoyant. These features make it an ideal webbing for some Marine applications. Polypropylene can also be used in some lighter weight lifting applications.

POLYPROPYLENE WEBBING

POLYPROPYLENE: Relatively inexpensive but has excellent properties

TEMPERATURE:

  • The melting point is 160°C.
  • It is not suitable for high-temperature applications.
  • Polypropylene does not lend itself well to heat setting.
  • Low-temperature resistance is excellent, maintaining strength and flexibility down to -70°C.

COMBUSTIBILITY: Polypropylene is difficult to ignite and shrinks away from flame quickly. It can be difficult to add finishes to improve flame retardancy but success has been achieved using additives at the melt spinning stage.

UV RESISTANCE: Has a high degradation rate when exposed to UV light, such as the sun. This makes Polypropylene unsuitable for uses that require long-term exposure to sunlight.

CHEMICAL RESISTANCE: Polypropylene is inert to most common chemicals which means it is suitable for chemical resistance applications.

INSECTS AND MICRO-ORGANISMS: Mildew resistant

OTHER OPTIONS

JACQUARD:

Jacquard webbing can be produced for a minimum production quantity of 5000 metres.

If the design is more intricate, such as a logo, printing would be a better option, however, this would need to be on a Polyester webbing due to the relatively low melting point of Polypropylene.

STRIPE DESIGNS:

Stripe designs can be woven for a minimum production quantity of 3000 metres using our current polypropylene shades to the customer’s requirements.

It is also possible to weave reflective stripes which are often used in emergency service uniforms and equipment.
